Shimano Claris is a newer, better quality group set than Sora. It has a more efficient shifting system and better durability. Although Sora is not quite as good as Claris, it is still a quality product and will give you many miles of happy cycling.
If you are looking to buy your first road bike and don’t want to spend too much money, I would recommend going with Claris over Sora. However, if you are willing to spend a little bit more money, I would definitely recommend upgrading to Claris or even higher-level Shimano groupsets. This will give you an even smoother ride and longer lasting equipment.

Shimano Claris
The system is simple, yet sophisticated with its two-in one function of brake levers that also act as gear shifters. The two systems are functionally equivalent. They both have 8 speeds, and the shifting mechanism works in the same way. The only real difference is in the materials used – Claris is a bit lighter because it uses less expensive materials, while Sora is a bit more robust because it uses sturdier materials.
If you’re not planning on doing any really hardcore cycling, either system will do just fine. But if you think you might be putting some serious miles on your bike, then I would recommend going with Sora – it’ll stand up to a little more abuse.
